The DC fellows have posted the first part of their MD Fest review. They’ve included a bunch of on-the-scene pics (including the one below) and impressions. Very cool stuff…and completely envy inducing because King even managed to snag one of Will Calhoun’s sticks. Dude!

77 Boadrum Documentary Film Premiere

September 25, 2008 | 1 Comment

Remember the awesomeness of 88 Boadrum? Well, last year’s equally awesome event, 77 Boadrum, was caught on film and will have its international premiere in New York on October 13. The documentary clocks in at 89 minutes and is in Japanese with English subtitles (we’re assuming the drumming itself doesn’t need any translating). Check out the press release below:

On July 7th, 2007 at 7:07pm, Japan’s musical innovators THE BOREDOMS orchestrated a performance by 77 drummers in New York City. This momentous event was documented by artist Jun Kawaguchi, showing the raw musical force of the instrument and the unique vision of THE BOREDOMS as they brought their experiment to fruition. 77 BOADRUM is the result, and a captivating one at that.
77 BOADRUM, Jun’s first feature film, was chosen by enthusiastic Boredoms admires and music fans, making it one of the top 10 popular films at the  New York - Tokyo Film Grand Prix 2008 early on. The film will be premiered at NYTFGP2008 FESTIVAL, with a special guest appearance by Jun and a gathering of drummers who participated in the event.

Sabian Sponsors “The Big Beat” National Drumming Event

September 24, 2008 | Leave a Comment

MEDUCTIC, Canada (Sept. 24, 2008) – SABIAN announces it has teamed up with the Five-Star Drum Shops to bring together the largest gathering of drummers ever assembled for a simultaneous drumming experience. Nine Five-Star stores across North America will host “The Big Beat” on Sunday, Nov. 2, to celebrate the joy of drumming and raise money for the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation. The Five-Star Drum Shops group is an organization of 37 independently owned specialty percussion stores in North America.

Each location is attempting to break the Guinness world record for the most drummers playing the same beat at one time (previously set by Donn Bennett Drum Studio, with 533) as well as set a record for drummers playing simultaneously in each location.

As an official sponsor of The Big Beat, SABIAN will contribute the equivalent of $2,500 to each participating store in the form of artist support and/or giveaways.

“It’s a privilege for SABIAN to be connected with ‘The Big Beat,’ this year,” said Stacey Montgomery-Clark, vice president of marketing at SABIAN. “We relish opportunities like this in which we can support the percussion industry and in particular the drummer consumer and independent retailer.”

The Big Beat is the first attempt to coordinate large scale drumming efforts across North America in the hope of expanding each year until drummers across the globe are locked in on one worldwide beat.

Each location will hold a raffle for participants with the overall winner getting an authentic autographed replica Beatles logo bass drum head. The first 200 participants in each city will receive a goody bag full of drum-related items and each location will also give away prizes donated by the biggest names in the drum industry.

Drummers of all skill levels and experience are encouraged to participate and contact one of these participating Five-Star member locations for details:

MD Fest 2008 Is a Wrap

September 22, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Well, dammit. Another MD Fest has come and gone, and we still haven’t managed to swindle and scheme our way into one (next year we are totally getting all Mission Impossible about it). Thankfully, Hudson Music set up a preview site of the event and posted some frighteningly good teaser vids of each drummer’s performance. The complete DVD is scheduled to hit shelves sometime in 2009 (which is only around 10 million seconds from now).

Need Tickets to the Modern Drummer Festival?

September 11, 2008 | Leave a Comment

One of the members over at Drummer Connection is selling four tickets to this year’s MD Fest, two for the show on Saturday (September 20) and two for the show on Sunday (September 21). Here are the details:

I have 4 tickets available for the 2008 Modern Drummer Festival in NY. My wife got them for me for our anniversary, but we are about to close on a new home so we decided it wouldn’t be a good financial decision to fly from Colo to NY and hotel and all. There are 4 and I will let them go for $300 obo. Go to http://www.artscenter.org/_downloads/ConcertHallSeats.pdf for seat locations. Saturday seats are Orch LFT E 41 & 42 (5th row). Sunday seats are Orch LFT C 36 & 37 (3rd row) plus 2 vouchers for free souvenirs and Festival T-Shirts. crypticzero@hotmail.com

If you do manage to scrape together the bucks to attend, be sure to sneak us some pics!

The Only Good Thing About the VMAs…

September 10, 2008 | Leave a Comment

…was seeing a little more of Travis Barker playing with DJ AM. In the video below, the dudes are performing with Lupe Fiasco on his song “Superstar.” What do you think about Trav’s cross-armed, ride cymbal beat in the intro? It would be easier to play by leading with the left-hand on the hi-hat…but it definitely wouldn’t look as cool.
