Stanton Moore’s New Album…

April 21, 2008 | 2 Comments

emphasis_cd.jpg …is being released tomorrow. We set aside our 15 bucks (but are hoping to pay only $9.90, if iTunes has a heart) months ago and have been gnawing on drumsticks ever since. Happily, LiveDaily’s review of Emphasis! (on Parenthesis), penned by a former editor for DRUM! magazine no less, confirms the wait wasn’t in vain. Not like there was really any doubt. Moore is the most consistently awesome drummer playing today. Yeah, we said it.

Ouch. Roots drummer ?uestlove talks about why Fall Out Boy Stump’s collaboration got the axe. In brief: the song “was sticking out like a sore thumb.”

Dafnis Prieto Releases New CD, Launches New Label

March 16, 2008 | Leave a Comment

We’re a bit jealous of Prieto: he’s got all that drumming talent, he’s pretty cute, and he just seems like a downright froody dude. And now the little pecker has gone and started what will no doubt be an adventurous, respected record label, Dafnison Music. The premier title is Dafnis’s own disc, Taking the Soul for a Walk, a new sextet affair that’s making many a reviewer’s toes pop. We’re downloading a copy now (just…about…there) and will post a gushing review shortly. Until then, here’s All About Jazz’s appropriately respectful, fairly staid breakdown of each track. Better yet, just skip right to the clip below for a sample.

Metallica Rumors!

March 10, 2008 | Leave a Comment

We’ve just deleted all our Chinese Democracy posts to make room for the inevitable spate of rumors about Metallica’s upcoming album. First in, a doozy. According to FMQB, Lars recently spoke to BBC 6 Music and whipped out an actual month:

We’re just finishing up a record, we’ve got six weeks left and it should be out in September. That’s the idea right now.

We’re pretty sure all of us here at BDT can take the wait. September is in only…um…15,778,464 seconds, right?

Morgan Rose Lost His iPhone…

And almost leaked his band’s new album. He had loaded Sevendust’s soon-to-be-released disc on his iPhone to play for a select few at the recent NAMM show in Los Angeles. All was going well until he forgot the sexy little Apple in a cab. But instead of falling into the claws of some BitTorrent junkie, the phone was found by a Randall employee who got it back to Rose with nary a note missing. Looks like we’ll have to wait until April 1st after all.

The Return of Narada Michael Walden

November 29, 2007 | Leave a Comment

Well, maybe not so much a return. He’s been doing all kinds of shit for years, but now he’s picking up the sticks again for something we’re actually interested in hearing: a new Santana album. It’s going to be a trio affair, a Latin-inspired melange of John Coltrane, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, et al.

Ringo Starr and Levon Helm: Old Drummers Releasing New Music

November 8, 2007 | Leave a Comment

Ringo’s new disc, Liverpool 8, will drop on January 15. I can pretty much guarantee it’s not going to show up on anyone’s regular playlist rotation here at BDT (bloody Christ, not even Paul’s new albums can infiltrate that inner musical sanctum), but we love Ringo anyway. Just on principle. ‘Cause if that guy could get laid, there’s some hope for the rest of us butt-uglies.

Levon Helm, former drummer and one of the vocalists for The Band, is also dusting off his sticks and knocking the rust from his voice on Dirt Farmer. The Band truly was the best bunch of workmen musicians who ever clawed and crawled from the bar circuit. Helm’s disc deserves a listen for that reason alone, but like Ringo’s, I’m pretty sure it’s not going to get much of a workout.
