Steve Gorman Back on the Road With the Black Crowes
February 29, 2008 | Leave a Comment
The Black Crowes’ new album might be pretty mediocre (or at least the four songs that Maxim heard were), but the band has always been a great live act. Long-time drummer Steve Gorman will be throning up again for the tour that starts this Sunday.
Vampire Weekend Drummer Injured
February 28, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Details are sketchy as of this post, but NME is reporting that Chris Thomson, drummer for the excellent band Vampire Weekend, was hit by a car tonight in London. He received treatment on the scene and was then taken to Royal London Hospital. According to NME,
A puddle of red liquid was on the tarmac where the drummer was felled, and a jacket caked in what looked like blood was lying by the side of the road.
We’ll keep our sticks crossed for him.
[update 2/29/08: Chris was released from the hospital and is doing good; in fact, he’s “100% fit” according to the band’s publicist.]
Multi-Touch Drum Pad for Your iPhone
February 28, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Our collective cocks haven’t been this gear hard in a long, long time. Moo-Cow-Music has ramped up the iPhone’s already considerable sex appeal by turning it into a miniature, hyper-portable drum machine. Install the company’s Drummer software, and you get 15 multi-touch drum pads and the sounds of 5 preloaded kits. Best of all, the program is free…though you do have to jailbreak your iPhone, at least until Apple stops being all fascist-y about third-party apps.
This is going to be BDT’s illegal weekend project. If you try it out first, post any audio/video links in the comments. Until then, check out Moo-Cow’s sample jams:

Scott Rockenfield Loves Samson
February 27, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Those damn Blabbermouth dudes have scooped us again by finding a day-old video of Scott Rockenfield, drummer for Queensryche and founder of RockenWraps, chattin’ about how much he loves Samson mikes et al. For a promo piece, it’s actually pretty watchable, though a bit of a cock tease with all the short performance clips. Watch only at your penis’s peril:

He played drums behind Jimi Hendrix, sang with Carlos Santana, and was the voice of the California Raisins. Now Buddy Miles is dead. As of this post, cause of demise is unknown.
[Update: one site is now reporting cause of death as congestive heart failure.]

The Hammerax Whipcrash
February 26, 2008 | Leave a Comment
Cymbal maker (or rather “sound maker”) Hammerax produces some way creative instruments—the Boomywang, the Dustbowl, and the Meanie, just to name a few. The latest member of the funky family is the Whipcrash, a heavy crash cymbal branded with an “S-shaped array of hammered microcups” that can be raked with a stick for various sound effects. You can check out how it and Hammerax’s other products sound here.
You just know Terry Bozzio is creaming his jeans over these things….Wonder when that Sabian endorsement is up?…

Coldplay’s Drum Machine

Guess Coldplay has decided to keep Will Champion around, for the band’s drum machine is being auctioned on eBay. As of this posting, the top bid is 720 pounds for a used E-mu SP-1200, the sound you’ve heard on albums by…this guy.
Only 13 hours left. Get it while you can.
Dave Rowntree Wants to Make a Difference

So why he wants to be a politician, we have no idea. Blur drummer Dave Rowntree is running for office again in London as a Labour-party candidate (Labour, by the way, are ostensibly the good guys in Brit government). Here’s what he had to say in his previous election bid:

Chad Smith Is Taking a Break

But only from the Chili Peppers. After getting a fistful of Grammy nominations for Stadium Arcadium and touring over 18 months to support the album, the Pepper guys decided to take a well-deserved year off. Smith, though, is keeping busy by jamming with Chickenfoot, recording with Glenn Hughes, and hanging with Dick Van Dyke.
Presumably he’ll also have some time now to learn his cymbal setup before doing another promo video:
