…for the first time in 12 years. The pair reunited to perform in support of Petrucci’s latest solo release, Terminal Velocity. Bassist Dave LaRue completes the trio. Portnoy and LaRue also recorded the album.
Holy damn, I cannot believe it has been twelve years (years!) since Portnoy left Dream Theater. We mere mortals are all old and even legit geriatric now, but Portnoy and Petrucci seem to defy time, at least as evidenced by the performance footage a fan posted from the gig in Rhode Island. The fan-captured audio kind of blows (as cell-phone audio is wont to do), but it’s obvious the dudes are still totally inspiring shred monsters. Check ’em out.
Even if you watched the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert on the Drum Channel, you still need to check out these cool pics from Michael Lowe, owner of the equally cool website Neil Peart Drumsticks. Our favorite is the shot below of Neil and his cymbal-spankin’ face.
Meinl has given the drummingverse a major treat by posting this new vid of the superbly grooving Benny Greb. The performance was captured at this year’s Meinl drum festival, and it features a tune from Greb’s upcoming CD. Two more videos will be released over the next few days. We’ll of course embed them all here at DC for your viewing pleasure.

The new concert DVD from Neil Peart and the fellows won’t be released until November 25, but a sneak peak of the song “Far Cry” was shown on VH1 last night. Try not to slobber on your monitor.
Well, dammit. Another MD Fest has come and gone, and we still haven’t managed to swindle and scheme our way into one (next year we are totally getting all Mission Impossible about it). Thankfully, Hudson Music set up a preview site of the event and posted some frighteningly good teaser vids of each drummer’s performance. The complete DVD is scheduled to hit shelves sometime in 2009 (which is only around 10 million seconds from now).
Good news for all Neil Peart groupies (…yes, we do enthusiastically include ourselves in that category): a new Rush DVD, Snakes & Arrows Live, will be released on November 25. The three-disc set was filmed with 21 high-def cameras in a wide-screen format (!), and it clocks in at 221 minutes (!!).
Here’s the awesome amount of content listed by disc:
Disc 1 “Limelight” “Digital Man” “Entre Nous” “Mission” “Freewill” “The Main Monkey Business” “The Larger Bowl” “Secret Touch” “Circumstances” “Between The Wheels” “Dreamline”
Disc 1 Extras What’s That Smell 2007 tour outtakes What’s That Smell outtakes “Far Cry” (alternate cut featuring rear screen footage) “The Way The Wind Blows” (alternate cut featuring rear screen footage) “Red Sector A” from the R30 Tour
Disc 2 “Far Cry” “Workin’ Them Angels” “Armor And Sword” “Spindrift” “The Way The Wind Blows” “Subdivisions” “Natural Science” “Witch Hunt” “Malignant Narcissism — De Slagwerker” “Hope” “Distant Early Warning” “The Spirit Of Radio” “Tom Sawyer” “One Little Victory” “A Passage To Bangkok” “YYZ”
Disc 3 Oh, Atlanta – The Authorized Bootlegs “Ghost Of A Chance” “Red Barchetta” “The Trees” “2112/The Temples Of Syrinx”
Sucks big stinky ass, doesn’t it? Unfortunately we can’t go either, but Hudson Music is hooking all of us up with updates starting September 19. Hudson’s MD Fest site promises “photos, blog reports, and…video” straight from the show. In case you’ve been living under your guitarist’s rock for the last few months, the lineup includes these dudes you might have heard before:
Thomas Pridgen (The Mars Volta) Billy Ward (Joan Osborne/Ace Frehley/B. B. King) Will Calhoun (Living Color) Ndugu Chancler (Michael Jackson/Santana/Weather Report) Simon Phillips & Protocol (Toto/The Who/Jeff Beck) Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree/King Crimson) Todd Sucherman (Styx/Brian Wilson) Dafnis Prieto (Michel Camilo) Derek Roddy (Serpents Rise/Traumedy)
Couldn’t make it to Germany for the Meinl Drum Festival that starts tomorrow? No, we couldn’t either, but thankfully the fine folks at Meinl have set up four webcams that snap a live picture every minute (no vid stream, alas). The drummer lineup includes Benny Greb (yes!) and Johnny Rabb.
Here are 25 opportunities to see Joey Jordison and Brann Dailor live. What you waitin’ for, maggots?
7/16 San Diego, CA (Coors Amphitheatre) 7/18 Phoenix, AZ (Cricket Wireless Pavilion) 7/19 Albuquerque, NM (Journal Pavilion) 7/20 Denver, CO (Coors Amphitheatre at Fiddler’s Green) 7/22 Kansas City, MO (Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre) 7/23 St. Louis, MO (Verizon Wireless Amphitheater) 7/25 Dallas, TX (Smirnoff Music Centre) 7/26 San Antonio, TX (Verizon Wireless Amphitheater) 7/27 Houston, TX (Sam Houston Race Park) 7/29 Tampa, FL (Ford Amphitheatre) 7/30 West Palm Beach, FL (Cruzan Amphitheater) 8/1 Virginia Beach, VA (Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater) 8/2 Pittsburgh, PA (Post-Gazette Pavilion) 8/3 Scranton, PA (Toyota Pavilion) 8/5 Boston, MA (Tweeter Center for Performing Arts) 8/6 Uniondale, NY (Nassau Coliseum) 8/8 Toronto, ON (Downsview Park) 8/9 Detroit, MI (DTE Energy Music Theatre) 8/10 Chicacgo, IL (First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre) 8/12 Atlanta, GA (Lakewood Amphitheatre) 8/13 Indianapolis, IN (Verizon Wireless Music Center Indianapolis) 8/15 Camden, NJ (Tweeter Center At The Waterfront) 8/16 Hartford, CT (New England Dodge Music Center) 8/17 Washington, DC (Nissan Pavilion) 8/19 Buffalo, NY (Darien Lake Performing Arts Center)
The Black Crowes’ new album might be pretty mediocre (or at least the four songs that Maxim heard were), but the band has always been a great live act. Long-time drummer Steve Gorman will be throning up again for the tour that starts this Sunday.
