Didn’t Ringo Used to Be Funny?

June 30, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Stodgy Ringo, you sir have bored us into retardation with this Q&A. Where be your gibes now? your gambols? your songs? your flashes of merriment?

Boo.

Zildjian Pitch Black Cymbals in France

June 29, 2008 | Leave a Comment

An online music store in France is displaying pics, prices, and descriptions of Zildjian’s Pitch Black cymbals. They are essentially coated ZHTs, and it looks like they’ll be heavily marketed to the young, up-and-coming bashers among us. For pics, scroll past our very rough (and possibly inaccurate) translation of the French promo text. If there are any native French speakers out there, let us know in the comments if we blew it bad.

Pitch Black: “Black is blackā€! Change your vision of cymbals! The Pitch Black series has a formidable and explosive Rock sound that approaches perfection! These cymbals were designed by and for heavy hitters who need a huge sound! Based on the manufacturing process of the 12% bronze formula that is already used in the ZHT series, the Pitch Black line has an additional tin element that reinforces the cymbals’ character. That in particular makes it possible to add weight and width to these cymbals, which gives a profile to the Black Pitch that is perfect for metal heads! These cymbals are guaranteed 100% Rock’n'roll, 100% brilliant, 100% as you love them! Zildjian worked for months to find a process that makes it possible to keep the black coating of your cymbals intact, even after years. Eight models of common Rock sizes are available. Once again, Zildjian is confirmed as being THE mark of innovative cymbals for discriminating musicians.

Travis Barker Playing Zildjian Pitch Black Cymbals?

June 28, 2008 | Leave a Comment

This is a new video of Barker beating the hell out of the song “Dope Boys” by The Game. Cool enough. But what really got our sticks standing at attention were the cymbals: are those Zildjian’s new Pitch Blacks Travis is bashing? And if so, they sound much better than we had anticipated. Perhaps there will be a professional and a budget line….

April Rose Pengilly

Fellow fellows, first drop your eyes to the pic below (linger a good minute or two…we totally understand) and then come back here for this scoop: April Rose Pengilly’s not merely a hot model with rock-father genes (thank you, INXS sax man!). No, Pengilly’s also apparently a drummer. And she plays in high heels. And she’s eighteen.

Like, when did the universe start doing requests?

Taiko Master Is Dead

June 28, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Daihachi Oguchi, the guru of contemporary taiko drumming, was hit by a car Thursday and died Friday of excessive bleeding. He was 84.

We here at BDT admittedly know precious little of the rich history of taiko (save of course that it must be hellaciously fun to whack ginormous drums with big sticks), but if the vid performance below is any indication, the fiery and loud-lunged Oguchi will be very much missed. We’re betting he didn’t go quietly into that good night.

[Update: His obit appeared today in the New York Times.]

Tony Williams Pic

We learned our lesson yesterday about timely drum-forum fishing and look at what we caught: a stunning pic of Tony Williams posted by Ronn Dunnett. We’re not sure if Dunnett took the photo himself (entirely possible given his great eye) or just found it online somewhere, but copyrights be damned: we ain’t taking the fucker down until the Feds come a kickin’.

Tico Torres Has a Clothing Line

June 27, 2008 | Leave a Comment

No, no, no. First Matt Sorum, then Andrew Hurley, and now goddamn Tico Torres, whose sin is decidedly the worst of all. The Bon Jovi drummer has started a clothing line for rugrats called (ready?….) Rock Star Baby. The miniature hipsterware (along with baby bottles and pacifiers, and…ugh, I just threw up into my mouth) is being sold at Harrods department store in London and can be had online as well. The cost? Just your cool card and all future breeding rights.
